On New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2019, 34-year-old Quinten Payne was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds near 305 N. Adams Street in Adel, Georgia. Officers who responded to a 911 call discovered Payne deceased at the scene; another man, 29-year-old Cody Robinson, was also shot and later died at a hospital.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation joined the Adel Police Department’s probe and investigators identified several suspects. In February 2020 arrest warrants were issued for 19-year-old Shamar Wilson, 17-year-old Gerome Pickett, and an unnamed 16-year-old juvenile; the juvenile was taken into custody and Wilson and Pickett were already incarcerated on unrelated charges. All three were charged with two counts of felony murder and two counts of aggravated assault. In May 2020 19-year-old Tavares Askew was arrested and charged with the same counts.
