Oralia Melo Meza, 38, was shot and killed in her Marietta, Georgia, home on the evening of December 21, 2019. Prosecutors say her ex-boyfriend, Juan Antonio Gonzalez, then 33, arrived to pick up the 4-year-old daughter they shared. After Meza handed over the child’s car seat and closed the door, Gonzalez allegedly fired through the door and windows, forced his way inside and searched for her.

A 16-year-old son was shot in the shoulder while trying to intervene; he survived with non-life-threatening injuries. Meza reportedly hid in a laundry closet while a friend ushered other children to safety. Witnesses said she staggered into the living room after being shot multiple times and that Gonzalez fired additional shots into her body.

Cobb County police encountered Gonzalez as he attempted to flee in his pickup, after he fired at a patrol car and led officers on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash. Gonzalez was arrested, indicted in March 2020 on charges including malice murder and aggravated assault, and later pleaded guilty to malice murder and related counts; he was sentenced to life in prison.
