On the morning of November 2, 2019, Gwinnett County police responded to a person-shot call at about 4:45 a.m. in a townhome community on Beaver Springs Lane in Norcross, Georgia. Inside one residence officers found 30-year-old Josh Dennis and his 55-year-old uncle, Derrick Dennis, both dead of gunshot wounds. Authorities treated the scene as a double homicide and determined both victims were Black males.
Investigators quickly focused on a single suspect known to both victims. Police identified 30-year-old Karlton Sirmons of Norcross and, after a multi-agency manhunt that included the U.S. Marshals Service, Sirmons was arrested in Atlanta on January 24, 2020. He was booked into the Gwinnett County jail, held without bond, and charged with two counts of felony murder and two counts of aggravated assault, with additional outstanding warrants in other counties. The motive for the killings remained unclear.
If anyone knew Josh Dennis, Derrick Dennis, or saw suspicious activity around Beaver Springs Lane that morning, please share tips with investigators.
