A dispute over twenty dollars ended in a deadly shooting on a Macon street. On September 28, 2019, 62-year-old Willie Green Smith Jr. and his 57-year-old cousin Michael Williams argued inside a home on the 400-block of Ibex Street before the confrontation moved into the street. Responding officers found Smith on the ground around 5 p.m.; he was alive but unresponsive and later died of his injuries.

Williams fled in his truck but was arrested less than an hour later and charged with murder. He was held without bond initially and later released on bond on March 27, 2020. Williams has claimed self-defense. As of late 2025, no trial date had been set and prosecutors said they needed additional testimony after a judge questioned the credibility of Williams’ witnesses. Smith’s widow, Fay Ellis-Smith, and the family remember him as a master welder and have urged any witnesses to come forward.

Did anyone see the argument on Ibex Street that afternoon or have information about what happened?
