Tyrese Carter was 17 when he was shot and killed in the early hours of New Year’s Day 2019 after performing at a New Year’s concert. Using the stage name Honcho Ree, Carter was shot around 12:30 a.m. on January 2, 2019, in the 2500 block of Bull Street in Savannah. First responders found him with life-threatening injuries and he later died at a local hospital.
Family and friends held vigils and publicly mourned the loss, with his mother speaking about the daily pain of losing her son and the community remembering him as a promising local artist. In May 2020 the Savannah Police Department announced an arrest: 19-year-old Dorian Rashad Heyward was charged with Carter’s murder and was served with a murder warrant on May 15, 2020, while already in the Chatham County Detention Center on unrelated charges. The events that led to the shooting remain under investigation.
Did anyone in the area know Carter or have information about the events that night?
