A family Thanksgiving in Savannah ended in tragedy on November 22, 2018, when nine-year-old Gabriel Jordan Early was fatally wounded in what authorities described as an accidental shooting. Gabriel, born September 16, 2009, was a student at Sarah Mills Hodge Elementary School and remembered by family as bright, fond of making up songs and good at math. He is survived by his mother, Brooke Early, his father Thaddeus Rogers, three siblings and an extended family that included grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Police reported an adult relative was involved in the accidental discharge of a firearm and said there was no apparent malicious intent. The family and community were left to grieve a sudden loss and the legal outcome remains unclear.
