Late afternoon on November 20, 2018, a family dispute over placement of deer stands on shared property in Jesup, Georgia, escalated into deadly violence on Penholloway Road. Sixty-year-old Luther F. Harter was shot and found gravely wounded by Wayne County deputies; he was initially conscious at the scene but later died of his injuries. Reports say Luther was the first to introduce a firearm into the confrontation.
Luther’s nephew Mickey Harter and Mickey’s wife Jessica Harter were arrested and charged in connection with the shooting. Their defense was that they fired in response to an imminent threat, asserting Luther had fired first. The case went to a Wayne County jury, which acquitted both Mickey and Jessica, finding Mickey acted in self-defense.
Who knew Luther or the Harter family and might be able to fill in missing details about that day on Penholloway Road?
