On the evening of November 5, 2018, 22-year-old Wintez Moody called 911 from his Brookwood Drive home in Covington, Georgia, reporting an intruder and hiding in a bedroom closet. The 911 call includes voices in the background and, 150 seconds after the call began, a gunshot. Moody told the dispatcher that he had been shot and identified one of his attackers as Trea Johnson.
Deputies from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office arrived within seven minutes but found Moody dead from a gunshot wound. Investigators say the killing followed a dispute over social media and texts and that Johnson had earlier participated in an armed robbery that evening. Police allege Johnson used a brick to break a back door to enter Moody’s home.
He was convicted by a jury in September 2021; a pre-sentence investigation was ordered before sentencing.
Did anyone in Covington know Moody or see anything unusual that night?
