A trip to Albany, Georgia, to buy car rims ended in the fatal shooting of 33-year-old Johnny Young of Jackson, Mississippi. On the morning of Saturday, October 27, 2018, Young and his brother-in-law arrived in the 1300 block of West Oglethorpe Boulevard for the transaction. Two men appeared, opened fire, and fled on foot. Young was struck in the chest, transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, and died around 12:30 p.m. that day.
Investigators quickly suspected robbery as the motive. Within days Albany police identified and arrested two suspects, Javon Thomas, 18, and Key Jylyn Norman, 20, each charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime; Javon Thomas had also been treated for gunshot wounds at the hospital. Police continued seeking a third person, 30-year-old Dontavious June June Thomas, who turned himself in in December 2018 and faced warrants for murder and aggravated assault plus charges for probation violation and gang activity. Authorities had looked for a gray or silver SUV, possibly a newer Chevrolet Equinox, linked to the third suspect.
If anyone witnessed the shooting, the arrival of suspects, or saw the described SUV in the area that morning, please come forward with information.
