On August 7, 2018, 18-year-old Malik Sayeed Murphy was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound inside a residence on North Herrington Street in Glennville, Georgia. A student-athlete at Tattnall County High School, he planned to attend Augusta University to study dentistry and continue competing in track and field and football.

Officers arrived at the scene around 2:30 a.m. and found two other people, David and Lesley Murphy, outside the home with gunshot injuries; both were taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Also present at the scene was 36-year-old Renata Files. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation took over the inquiry, and preliminary findings indicated Files was responsible for Malik Murphy’s death and the injuries to David and Lesley Murphy. Murder and other charges were announced as forthcoming and an autopsy was scheduled at the GBI crime lab in Savannah.
