Crystal Dawn Vega was 30 and a mother of five when she was found with a gunshot wound to the head in her West 13th Street apartment in Rome, Georgia, in June 2018. The shooting happened about ten days after she gave birth to her fifth child and occurred in the presence of two of her young children. Investigators reported a large pool of blood inside the apartment, and family members described a history of domestic violence in the couple’s relationship. Friends said Vega had been planning to leave the relationship.
Nakotah Javez Smith was identified as a person of interest after a neighbor said he knocked on her door claiming Vega had shot herself and asked the neighbor to drive Vega to the hospital; Smith then fled and remained at large for two weeks before being arrested. He was charged in Vega’s death; prosecutors described him as controlling and possessive. Does anyone have information about Vega’s last days or the household on West 13th Street?
