On the morning of May 6, 2018, 27-year-old Nathan Jones was fatally shot in the driveway of his home on Horizon Parkway in Buford, Georgia. He and his wife, Krystal, had returned from a Cinco de Mayo outing just before 2 a.m. When gunfire echoed in the neighborhood, Krystal first thought it was fireworks. After going inside and realizing Nathan had not followed, she found him between their cars with a gunshot wound to the head. Gwinnett County Police pronounced him deceased at the scene and recovered a family car with a bullet hole that was towed for evidence.

Police said there were no immediate suspects and they did not know whether they were seeking one person or several. Investigators canvassed the neighborhood for witnesses and surveillance footage; early reports gave no description of a shooter. Nathan was described as the primary provider for his family and is survived by his wife and two young children, ages four and five at the time.
