Mario DeAndra Molden was 34 when he was shot and killed during an altercation outside The Woods Motel on Main Street in Jonesboro on the evening of March 23, 2018. Clayton County officers responding to reports of a fight and a shooting arrived around 8 p.m. and found Molden deceased at the scene.

Initial witness statements suggested a woman may have fired the shot, but nearby surveillance footage captured the event and showed a male suspect. That footage led officers to identify and locate the alleged shooter at the motel: 50-year-old Lorenzo Gordon of Jonesboro. He was taken into custody and charged with murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. A woman who said she was a family member of Molden was involved in a single-car crash near the motel shortly after the shooting but was not injured.
