A family dispute in Fort Valley, Georgia, ended in a fatal shooting at the Indian Oaks apartment complex on East Church Street on February 24, 2018. Twenty-year-old Dalvin Kentrell Smith of Marshallville was involved in an altercation with a relative, Corey Darnell McKinney Jr. Witnesses say Smith threatened to cause bodily harm and pushed McKinney into his apartment; moments later McKinney told Smith to leave and gunshots were heard. Smith was struck multiple times in the upper torso and was pronounced dead at the scene around 12:30 p.m.
Law enforcement took 20-year-old Corey D. McKinney of Fort Valley into custody that day. He was initially charged with aggravated assault and later faced upgraded charges including murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. McKinney stated he shot Smith after Smith refused to leave and continued to threaten him. McKinney pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and received a 20-year sentence, with the first 12 years to be served in prison and the remainder on probation.
