A routine attempt to serve a warrant in Locust Grove, Georgia, on February 9, 2018, ended in a deadly shootout. Deputies Michael D. Corley and Ralph Sid Callaway went to serve a failure-to-appear warrant on 39-year-old Tierre Guthrie. Guthrie became combative, backup was called, and Locust Grove Police Officer Chase Maddox, a five-year veteran, responded. A physical struggle escalated into gunfire. Maddox was struck three times, including a fatal wound to the head, and died at Atlanta Medical Center. Guthrie was shot four times and died at the scene.
Both deputies were also wounded; Deputy Corley was treated and released after a vest was struck, while Deputy Callaway suffered a lower abdominal wound and underwent surgery and was reported stable. Maddox left behind a wife and a young son, and a second son was born four days after his death. Neighbors described Guthrie as a former U.S. Marine and a father who held anti-government beliefs. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation took over the inquiry.
Are there details from that day or the people involved that readers in the Locust Grove area can add?
