On January 21, 2018, 24-year-old Balil Whitfield was found inside a vehicle on the 2100 block of Hudson Street in Savannah, Georgia, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Authorities treated his death as a homicide.

Investigators quickly focused on 20-year-old Ricky Jerome Boyd. On January 23, 2018, U.S. Marshals and Savannah-Chatham Metro Police went to a Marian Circle residence to serve an arrest warrant for Boyd. Officers say Boyd emerged holding what looked like a firearm that was later identified as a CO2-powered BB air gun, did not comply with commands, and raised the weapon toward officers; multiple officers fired and Boyd was struck and later died at a hospital. A Savannah-Chatham Metro Police sergeant was also shot and treated and released.

A Chatham County grand jury heard testimony it described as substantial credible evidence connecting Boyd to Whitfield’s murder, including recovery of Boyd’s cell phone at the scene, a statement attributed to Boyd by his mother that he admitted involvement to his father, and an identification placing Boyd in the backseat of Whitfield’s car. Boyd’s mother, Jameillah Smiley, later said a Savannah detective told her they did not believe her son was responsible, leaving aspects of the case unresolved.

Does anyone have information about Whitfield’s movements on January 21, 2018, or about the people who were with him that afternoon?
