Tovara Lewis Flowers, 39 and known by the nickname Kojack, was shot and killed on October 24, 2017 on the 600 block of East Jane Street at Ora Lee West in Valdosta, Georgia. Prosecutors said Flowers was shot five times in the back with a .38-caliber revolver.
Jean Claude Doricien, 31 at the time, was charged in connection with the killing. At trial the defense said Doricien acted in self-defense, alleging he was being robbed by someone else and feared for his life; Doricien reportedly told police he did not remember how many times he fired. Prosecutors argued Doricien’s account was inconsistent and said he retrieved his gun to get back money or marijuana.
A Lowndes County jury found Doricien guilty of felony murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of marijuana. He was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole after 30 years for the murder and aggravated assault, plus five consecutive years for the firearm charge, and a concurrent 12-month term for misdemeanor marijuana possession.
