Fifteen-year-old George Akins Jr. was killed on the evening of Saturday, October 21, 2017, in Savannah, Georgia. A sophomore at Windsor Forest High School and a running back and linebacker on the football team, he had been waiting outside a McDonald’s near the Savannah Mall for his parents when an argument between two groups escalated and gunfire erupted. Akins was fatally struck; another 15-year-old Windsor Forest player was wounded.
Within days the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department arrested 16-year-old Jeffery Burton and authorities announced he would be tried as an adult. In November 2017 a Chatham County grand jury indicted Burton on malice murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault. A trial court later suppressed custodial statements Burton made during a video-taped interview, and the Georgia Supreme Court upheld that suppression, finding the state had not shown the then-16-year-old knowingly and voluntarily waived his Miranda rights.
Anyone who remembers George, was at the Savannah Mall that night, or has information about the shooting is asked to come forward.
