Kent Wimberly Jr, 28, was found fatally shot outside the Astro Club at 153 Sunset Drive just beyond Americus in the early morning of Sunday, October 8, 2017. Responding officers discovered he had sustained a gunshot wound to the head; the Sumter County Deputy Coroner pronounced him dead at the scene.

Investigators from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Region III Americus Office and the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, with the Americus Police Department assisting, identified a suspect, 30-year-old Cordera Shantee Leverett of Americus. Leverett was taken into custody during a traffic stop by the Georgia State Patrol in Marion County the Sunday after the shooting and was charged with felony involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct; he was held in the Sumter County Jail.

The scene grew chaotic when Wimberly’s girlfriend, 23-year-old Alexeus Brianna Mercer, was told of his death; she was involved in an altercation with a sheriff’s deputy, arrested on charges of obstruction of law enforcement officers and criminal trespass, and released on bond the following Monday.

Does anyone have information about the events near the Astro Club that morning or knew Kent Wimberly Jr?
