On the evening of October 8, 2017, 22-year-old Savannah resident Shawn Rhinehart was shot and killed on Betty Drive after an argument at a nearby park. Rhinehart and a friend, Robert Reeves, were allegedly confronted by Jose Carrillo; Carrillo was said to have motioned as if he had a firearm. Rhinehart and Reeves left in a vehicle and were pursued in an orange sports car. The chase ended when multiple rounds were fired into Rhinehart and Reeves’ vehicle. Rhinehart was struck in the chest and arm and was found dead in the car; Reeves was injured and drove to a hospital.
Police quickly identified 22-year-old Jose Carrillo as a suspect and issued a murder warrant; he surrendered days later. A second man, Archie Marion Bryant, was also identified. A Chatham County grand jury indicted both men in May 2018 on malice murder, two counts of felony murder, and two counts of aggravated assault; Carrillo faced an added count for possession of a firearm by a first-offender probationer and Bryant for possession by a convicted felon. Bryant later pleaded to a reduced charge and was convicted on that plea. Carrillo was convicted at trial on felony murder and related counts and received a life term plus a consecutive 20-year sentence; his appeal arguing ineffective counsel was later rejected.
Does anyone have additional detail about the confrontation at the park or the orange sports car involved that might help clarify what happened that night?
