On September 2, 2017, Willie Lee Laster, 57, was found in a yard on T E Moone Street in Montezuma, Georgia, with multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Neighbors reported hearing two shots followed shortly by two more.

Investigators say Laster and his neighbor, Aaron McDonald, had a heated argument that turned physical when the men struggled for a handgun; both sustained gunshot wounds. McDonald was treated at a local hospital and later transferred to a facility in Macon. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation took the lead on the inquiry, and law enforcement indicated they would consult the District Attorney before filing charges. No charges were ultimately filed in Laster’s death.
