Jesse Thomas was 17 when he was shot and killed during a party in McDonough, Georgia, on the night of May 13, 2017. A standout basketball player at Stockbridge High School who had recently attended prom and planned to play at Indian River State College, Jesse was celebrating his college acceptance when a fight erupted at his cousin’s home and gunfire followed. He was rushed by his brother to Henry-Piedmont Hospital but died of his wounds.

Henry County Police investigators interviewed more than 50 witnesses and identified 19-year-old Dexter Deshawn Covington as a person of interest. Covington later turned himself in and was arrested on charges that included murder, aggravated assault, nine counts of reckless conduct, and criminal trespassing. The community mourned Jesse with a vigil at the high school football field; his team retired his No. 13 jersey and dedicated the next season to him.
