In the early morning of April 22, 2017, gunfire on Beverly Avenue in Albany, Georgia, left two teenagers shot inside a car. Fifteen-year-old Jalen Walker died at the scene; 18-year-old Quatez Daishon Strong was critically wounded and taken to Navicent Health in Macon, where he died on April 23, 2017. Both victims were African American males.

The investigation led to indictment of Joseph Jones III on July 5, 2017, on multiple counts including two counts of felony murder based on aggravated assault, aggravated assault counts, and firearms charges tied to the deaths of Strong and Walker. Jones was tried in December 2018, found guilty on all counts, and in January 2019 received two concurrent life sentences with the possibility of parole for the felony murder convictions plus consecutive probationary terms for the firearm counts. An appeal raised challenges to the sufficiency of the evidence and argued provocation might reduce the offense to voluntary manslaughter.
