Thomas Lamar Vining, a 58-year-old White man from Douglas, Georgia, was shot and killed before dawn on February 19, 2017, in the Green Acres community off Ramblewood Road. Deputies were originally dispatched on a criminal-trespass call and learned en route that Vining had been shot. He was found with a shotgun wound to his back and was taken to Coffee Regional Medical Center, where he died.
Investigators quickly focused on one suspect. Elton Gregory Griffis of Douglas was arrested the day after the shooting and initially held in the Coffee County Jail while charges were prepared. Griffis was charged with malice murder, and later pleaded guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter. Judge Andy Spivey sentenced Griffis to 15 years, with the first four years to be served in prison.
