In the winter of 2017 a shootout at the Windwood Apartments in Austell, Georgia, left two men dead. Twenty-six-year-old Deandre Brooks of Montgomery, Alabama, and 28-year-old Roderick Foster were found with gunshot wounds on a Wednesday night; both were taken to a nearby hospital and died shortly after. First responders had been at the complex for a separate call about a child locked in a car when the shooting occurred.

Police described the area as having seen several violent incidents in the months before the double homicide. Authorities arrested 26-year-old Broderick Taylor of Atlanta and charged him with two counts of felony murder, two counts of felony aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon; he was held without bond at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center.
