Vitali Mialik, 34, was shot and killed on the night of Friday, February 3, 2017, while stopped at a Valero gas station in the 1700 block of Beaver Ruin Road in unincorporated Norcross. His family described him as in the wrong place at the wrong time; he had lived in the area nine years and was saving to bring his wife and two children from Belarus to the United States.

After all three were inside the convenience store, a verbal argument continued in the parking lot. One of the men retrieved an assault rifle from the vehicle and shot Mialik once in the neck. He was pronounced dead at the scene when police arrived around 11:15 p.m.

Gwinnett County investigators used surveillance footage and tips to identify one suspect as 19-year-old Nickolas Kaymon Young and obtained an arrest warrant charging him with murder and aggravated assault. The second man has not been publicly identified. Young was taken into custody on March 16, 2017, at a residence off Collins Hill Road and booked into the Gwinnett County Jail.
