Emory Austin Carter Jr., a 20-year-old African American man, was shot and killed on the evening of November 28, 2016, in Valdosta, Georgia. He was struck multiple times while walking through the Ora Lee West housing complex on East Ann Street at about 9:18 p.m. Investigators believe his killing was retribution for a separate shooting two weeks earlier.
On November 14, 2016, Carter and another person allegedly went to the home of 25-year-old Brian Keith Moore with the intent to rob him; during that encounter Carter reportedly shot and killed Moore. A friend of Moore’s removed a handgun and narcotics from the scene before police arrived. Police say Moore’s family and friends knew who the shooter was but did not share that information with law enforcement, a factor described by the police chief as having hindered the investigation.
In connection with the two killings, authorities charged Justin Emanuel Brown, 28, the brother of Brian Moore, with felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime in Carter’s death. Malik Griffin, 20, was charged with aggravated assault for his alleged role as the driver during Moore’s killing, and 23-year-old Jordan Williams was charged with tampering with evidence and making false statements for allegedly removing items from the initial scene.
Did anyone in Valdosta recognize these names or have information about the events leading up to these shootings?
