A quiet Sunday evening in Springfield, Georgia, ended in tragedy when 30-year-old Michael Leon King Jr. was shot on July 17, 2016. Deputies from the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office responding to a report of a shooting on Oakton Drive found King inside his vehicle with a fatal gunshot wound. The sheriff’s office treated the incident as a homicide and opened an immediate investigation. Detectives pursued leads in the days after the shooting and described the event as an isolated incident rather than a random act, but no public information about suspects or arrests has been released.
