On the evening of July 4, 2016, 24-year-old Julien R. Wyant was found shot multiple times and lying face down in the parking area of the Orchard Cove apartment complex on Grosslake Parkway in Covington, Georgia. An aspiring professional boxer and African American, Wyant suffered three gunshot wounds—two to his back and one to his head.

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office investigated and identified 25-year-old Nathaniel L. Barnes as a suspect. Barnes was arrested during a traffic stop on July 15, 2016, and charged with Wyant’s murder. In August 2017 Barnes pleaded guilty in Newton County Superior Court; he was serving probation for a 2014 cocaine conviction at the time of the killing. As part of a negotiated plea Barnes received a life sentence with parole eligibility after 30 years. Wyant’s mother, Tanya, delivered a victim impact statement describing her son as a caring person who looked after his family and the lasting harm his death has caused.

Does anyone have memories of Julien or information about that July 2016 evening that could add context to what happened?
