William David Powell, 63, was shot and killed on his Stockbridge, Georgia, property on a June night in 2016 after three Henry County officers responded to a 911 report of a woman screaming for help and gunshots. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says the officers had been dispatched to the wrong address. Powell, awakened by his dogs, went outside with his handgun to check the disturbance and was shot in the neck; he was taken to Atlanta Medical Center and later died of his injuries.

Accounts differ about what happened in the moments before the shooting. The GBI reported officers gave verbal commands for Powell to drop his weapon and he did not comply. The family’s attorney said Powell’s wife, who was nearby, did not hear any commands, heard two gunshots, saw him fall, then locked the door and called 911, only learning the figures outside were police after placing that call. Sgt. Patrick D. Snook was identified as the officer who fired the fatal shot and was placed on paid administrative leave. The GBI turned its investigation over to the Henry County District Attorney and the matter was scheduled for grand jury review in December 2016.

Friends and family described Powell as a good man. Does anyone have information about the response that night or about how the officers came to be sent to the wrong address?
