On April 7, 2016, 14-year-old Jajuan McDowell was fatally shot inside a residence on East 69th Street in Savannah, Georgia. Jajuan had been visiting family for spring break from Atlanta and was remembered for his love of animals and his wish to become a veterinarian. Emergency crews took him to Memorial University Medical Center, where he died of his wounds.

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department Violent Crimes detectives investigated. Initial findings indicated the firearm discharged while Jajuan and another teenager were playing with it, and the shooting was described as accidental. On May 12, 2016, the other 14-year-old present turned himself in and was charged with involuntary manslaughter; he was placed in the Regional Youth Detention Center.
