In the early morning hours of August 11, 2015, 19-year-old Caylen Gooch was found shot in the street of the Pebble Brook subdivision in Covington, Georgia. Gooch, a sophomore at Clayton State University and a Newton County resident, had walked an estimated 75 to 100 yards after being wounded before collapsing. An autopsy showed he had been shot once in the face at close range and once in the back.
Investigators arrested 20-year-old William Dontrel Winston of Covington the Friday after the discovery, charging him with felony murder, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. At trial in November 2016, testimony from a close friend of Gooch placed Winston with the victim the night of the shooting and described events beginning with an arranged marijuana deal that did not take place. The jury convicted Winston on all counts and sentenced him to life for malice murder, with additional terms for the other charges; the Georgia Supreme Court later upheld the conviction.
If anyone knew Caylen, his movements that night, or has information relevant to the case, please share what is known.
