James Napoleon Hawkins, 44, was killed in Albany, Georgia, on July 5, 2015. Court records describe the violence as erupting during a planned armed robbery near a motel. According to testimony, three men had been moving around Albany that night discussing buying drugs and then robbing a dealer. Surveillance footage and eyewitnesses showed a pursuit of another man at the motel; after that person escaped, two of the men ran through an alley and encountered Hawkins at a bus stop.

Testimony at the later trial stated that Hawkins confronted and tackled one of the men, and that the other man then shot Hawkins. The autopsy said Hawkins was shot three times in his left side from at least two-and-a-half feet away, with wounds to chest, hip, and knee described as fatal, potentially fatal, and nonfatal; he also had blunt-force injuries consistent with a fall. Family members described his death as sudden and senseless and remembered him as someone trying to build a future and help others.

Two cousins driving by witnessed the shooting. A grand jury later indicted three men in the case, and two co-defendants entered plea agreements and testified. Does anyone have memories of Hawkins or information about that night that could add context to what happened?
