Phillip Ronald Smith, 55, was found unresponsive outside the Atlanta Street Apartments in Gainesville, Georgia, on June 15, 2015. The Hall County Coroner’s Office determined he died of a gunshot wound to the head, and authorities treated the death as a homicide. Early reports did not disclose how many shots were fired or whether there were other injuries.

A graduate of Gainesville High School, Smith was a member of the 1978 state championship baseball team.
