On a late Sunday afternoon in Savannah on May 31, 2015, 15-year-old Mikell Wright was found with gunshot wounds near the Sunrise Villas apartments on East 38th Street. He was taken to Memorial University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His younger brother was also struck by gunfire in the same incident.

Within days three teenagers were taken into custody in connection with the shooting: 15-year-olds Zykieam Redinburg and Tabais Daniels, and a 13-year-old, Antonio Griffin. All three were charged with murder and were to be tried as adults. Mikell’s family described the motive as a dispute over $10 and a broken cell phone.

One of the accused agreed to cooperate and testify for the prosecution at the joint trial of the other two, and that testimony played a central role in the proceedings. The case left the Savannah community reeling.

If anyone knew Mikell or has information about what happened near Sunrise Villas that day, please share what you know.
