Detavious Jamalcom Milner, a 22-year-old Black man from Rome, Georgia, was killed late April 7, 2015, in a burst of gunfire at a house on Copeland Street. Police were called shortly after 11 p.m. about shots fired; when officers arrived a wounded person ran toward a patrol car, others were screaming, and investigators found Milner had been shot to death while several others were wounded but survived. Early investigation led to the arrest of Joseph Hamilton Jackson, accused of entering the home, demanding cash from Milner, and shooting him.
As detectives dug deeper the case broadened into a group attack tied to a robbery. Prosecutors later described a plan to confront Quatevious Johnson over money: Zjuantavious Marquis Jackson allegedly handed a gun to Joseph Jackson, they rode with Javarick Davon McCain to the house, and a crowd in a bedroom was confronted at gunpoint. Court records say Zjuantavious Jackson fired the shots that killed Milner while others were injured; witnesses and testimony, however, at times pointed to different participants.
By late 2016 grand jurors had indicted Zjuantavious Marquis Jackson and Javarick Davon McCain; Joseph Jackson had already been jailed and later testified against Zjuantavious Jackson. Zjuantavious Jackson was convicted at a March 2017 trial of malice murder and related charges and received life plus additional time; appeals were pursued afterward. Does anyone have information about Milner, the people present that night, or what led to the confrontation on Copeland Street?
