On the evening of January 19, 2015, 34-year-old James Pastures was fatally shot in front of an apartment on the 1900 block of East 51st Street in Savannah, Georgia. The slaying prompted a long investigation by Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department violent-crimes detectives and later involvement by the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force.
In March 2016, detectives arrested 24-year-old Henry Speaks on a murder charge in Pastures’ death. A second suspect, 22-year-old Shacqueal Yves Omar Sanders, was later identified; Sanders turned himself in and was also charged with murder. Both men were tried alongside other defendants in a case that tied the killings to alleged local gang activity. An initial October 2018 trial ended in a mistrial after a juror threat and related juror-intimidation arrests.
A new trial followed, and in November 2018 a Chatham County jury found Shacqueal Sanders and Henry Speaks guilty of the malice murder of James Pastures. Does anyone have information about Pastures, the scene on East 51st Street, or contacts who might help fill gaps in the timeline?
