Jackson OQuinn, 13, died from a single gunshot wound to the chest on the morning of Sunday, January 18, 2015, after a weekend hunting outing in the small community of Baconton, Georgia. He had been hunting that morning in Randolph County with another 13-year-old under the supervision of one of their grandfathers. After the hunt the grandfather drove them to the friend’s home in Baconton, where they were told to put the shotguns away to be cleaned later.
At about 10:15 a.m. a shotgun blast was heard while the friend’s father worked outside. Emergency services were summoned, but Jackson was pronounced dead at the scene. The Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office described the event as a hunting-related incident. Law enforcement opened an investigation and, in initial news reports, no charges had been filed.
If anyone in Baconton or Randolph County was present that morning or has information about what happened, please come forward with what you know.
