On the night of December 10, 2014, 20-year-old Nikki Guined died at the Monroe, Georgia home she shared with her boyfriend, 21-year-old Walton County deputy jailer Dwight Buchanan, after suffering a single gunshot wound. That night the couple, another couple, and a visitor had been drinking. An argument between Guined and Buchanan reportedly ended and the two went to their bedroom. While intimate, Guined asked for Buchanan’s pistol; he initially hesitated but gave her an unloaded gun. She asked him to load it, and Buchanan loaded a magazine, chambered a round, then removed the magazine before returning the pistol to her. Guined placed the muzzle under her right jaw and pulled the trigger.
The Walton County Sheriff’s Office called in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation because a jailer was involved. Buchanan was placed on paid administrative leave, later arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct, and was fired from his job. Investigators noted alcohol at the scene and the sheriff said jailers are not issued service weapons and that the pistol may have been a gift; he also said Buchanan might not have realized some pistols will fire with a chambered round after the magazine is removed.
Are there details about the scene or timeline that anyone nearby remembers and hasn’t already shared with authorities?
