A quiet evening in Hephzibah, Georgia, ended in tragedy on November 10, 2014, when 17-year-old Butler High School student Jerald Carter Jr. was shot and killed. The shooting took place about 8:15 p.m. at the intersection of Ethan Way and Mathews Court. Richmond County sheriff’s deputies found three victims; Carter and 21-year-old Ian Roberts were pronounced dead at the scene from at least one gunshot wound each, and a third person was wounded.
Authorities connected the shooting to an ongoing dispute that escalated into the fatal encounter. In the days after the double homicide, three people were arrested: Markale Campbell, Demetrius Butler, and Carlos Heard. All three faced charges related to the murders, and subsequent legal proceedings resulted in a conviction for Carlos Heard.
Does anyone from the Hephzibah area remember the neighborhood that night or have information about the dispute that led to this violence?
