David Hooks, 59, of East Dublin, Georgia, called the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office on September 23, 2014, after discovering guns and a Lincoln Aviator missing from his property. Deputies located a suspect, Rodney Garrett, who admitted stealing from Hooks’ property and told officers he had found methamphetamine and digital scales in a vehicle at Hooks’ home. Deputies relied on that information, along with older allegations, to obtain a search warrant.

Late on September 24, deputies and members of the sheriff’s response team executed the warrant. Teresa Hooks said the family had been on edge after the burglary; David Hooks woke, saw dark-clothed figures approaching, and came downstairs with a shotgun. Deputies breached the home and fired multiple shots. David Hooks was struck and killed inside his house; no drugs were found during the search. A Laurens County grand jury in June 2015 declined to bring criminal charges against the deputies.

Teresa Hooks later sued investigator Christopher Brewer and others, alleging the warrant rested on false or misleading information and omissions. Federal judges later ruled a jury could find Brewer acted intentionally or with reckless disregard for the truth; the parties reached a settlement in 2022. Does anyone have information about the burglary or the warrant process that led to the raid?
