In late summer 2014, 26-year-old Vernicia Woodard was found dead on Elm Street in Hapeville, Georgia. A city worker discovered her body on August 22 after it had been set on fire. Woodard had been shot multiple times before her body was doused with fuel and ignited. She was the mother of an 8-year-old daughter.

Investigators traced the case to Tahreem Zeus Rana, then a 23-year-old Atlanta police officer, after learning Woodard and Rana had connected online through Craigslist and met the night she was killed. Cellphone records placed Woodard in Hapeville after she last communicated with Rana. Prosecutors say Rana drove her to a secluded spot, shot her, and then attempted to destroy evidence by burning the body. Rana tried to flee the country and was arrested at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on August 28, 2014.

Forensic testimony and DNA evidence linked Woodard to Rana’s service weapon, and experts reported Woodard had defensive wounds. Rana was charged with murder, kidnapping, arson, tampering with evidence, and violating his oath of office. Did anyone in Hapeville or the online community know Vernicia or recall her plans that night?
