Willie Bernard Nard Thomas was 19 when he was shot while standing in his yard at 3116 Hillcrest Circle in Tifton, Georgia, on August 22, 2014. He was taken to Tift Regional Medical Center but was pronounced dead after efforts to save him.

The Tift County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation opened a joint inquiry. Investigators used interviews and search warrants and said citizen tips were helpful. Within a week, three men were arrested in connection with the shooting: 21-year-old DeAnthony Raphael Davenport and 19-year-old Austin Jermaine McIntyre, each charged with malice murder, felony murder, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony; and 21-year-old Derrick Lamar Britt, charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, theft by receiving stolen property, obstruction of an officer, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
