Afolabi Odifa, 36, was found slumped over the wheel of his taxi with the engine running in the Spring Lakes Apartments parking area on Chase Common Drive in Norcross. Neighbors first thought he was asleep or intoxicated; hours later he was discovered to have been shot in the head. The Gwinnett County Medical Examiner’s Office determined he died from a gunshot wound to the back of his head. He had left for a short fare from home that night and never returned.
Odifa was originally from Nigeria, had become a U.S. citizen the year before, and had been driving a taxi for three months. He and his wife had moved to the United States six months earlier with their infant son. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation took over the case, and two people were arrested: 23-year-old Adam Matthew Pfeifer and 17-year-old Cameron Hollis. Prosecutors said Odifa picked up the two from a local mall, then was robbed and shot in the apartment complex. Hollis later told police Pfeifer shot Odifa.
In May 2015 a jury found Cameron Hollis, then 18, guilty of aggravated assault and firearm possession and sentenced him to 25 years; he was acquitted of murder and jurors could not reach a verdict on a felony murder charge. Adam Matthew Pfeifer remained awaiting trial on murder, aggravated assault, and armed robbery charges. Anyone with information about Odifa’s last fare or movements that night is asked to come forward.
