On the evening of July 24, 2014, Taurus Javon Lewis, a 37-year-old African American man from Baldwin County, was shot and killed outside a residence at 110 Burney Road in Gordon, Georgia. The shooting occurred at about 8:15 p.m.; Lewis was found on the ground with several gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Homeowner Jeffrey King, 29, told authorities Lewis approached him with a firearm and that King believed he was about to be robbed. King said he retrieved a gun from his vehicle and fired multiple shots at Lewis. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist the Gordon Police Department, and no charges had been filed against King while investigators continued to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
What details about the encounter or witness accounts could help clarify whether the shooting was self-defense?
