William Jake Embert was 53 when he died at his Hibiscus Road home in Albany, Georgia, on the morning of June 28, 2014. His wife, Susan Embert, called 911 reporting he had shot himself; deputies found him in the bedroom with a fatal gunshot wound to the head and a .45 handgun in his hand. The Dougherty County coroner initially ruled the death a suicide.
Jake’s family did not accept that finding. They said he was strongly opposed to suicide and hired a private investigator who reported inconsistencies at the scene, including the firearm’s positioning and an absence of blood spatter on his hand. The investigator also alleged traces of antifreeze, arsenic, and insecticides were found in his hair fibers and that Jake had been ill in the months after marrying Susan, who worked as a nurse. Those findings led the Dougherty County District Attorney to reopen the case.
Susan Embert was arrested in February 2015 and later indicted on malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and firearm possession during the commission of a crime in connection with Jake’s death. Did anyone in the Albany area know about Jake’s illness or notice anything unusual around the family before his death?
