Michael Jerome Allen, 52, was shot on the evening of June 11, 2014 near East Lathrop Avenue and Bay Street in Savannah. He was taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center and died of a gunshot wound on Friday, June 13, 2014. Allen was a native of Millen, Georgia, had lived in Savannah for 28 years, was father to four sons, and had worked for the International Longshoremen’s Association Local 1414 for more than a decade.

Savannah–Chatham Metropolitan Police opened an investigation immediately after the shooting. Investigators later identified a suspect; Carlos Heard was arrested and charged with Allen’s murder. The case moved into the judicial process, and the family requested prayers and community support while they coped with the loss of someone described as loving and free-spirited with a huge heart.
