On the late afternoon of December 17, 2012, officers responded to a domestic disturbance at a Motel 6 in Stockbridge, Georgia, where Tremaine Lynn Lebis and his wife Lisa Ann Lebis were being evicted. Clayton County police officer Sean Louis Callahan, 24, who had been on the force about four months, and another officer attempted to arrest Tremaine Lebis. Lebis resisted and fled on foot; during a chase he opened fire on the pursuing officers.
Officer Callahan was struck twice in the head and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he died the next morning on December 18, 2012. The officers returned fire and killed the 42-year-old suspect at the scene. Lisa Ann Lebis was arrested after the shooting and initially charged with obstruction and simple battery; prosecutors later tried her as a party to felony murder, and in 2014 a jury convicted her and imposed life without parole plus 35 years.
The Georgia Supreme Court later overturned her murder conviction, finding the state had not proven she jointly possessed the murder weapon at the time of the shooting; her two misdemeanor obstruction convictions were also reversed.
