On July 20, 2011, Clayton County Deputy Richard Joseph Daly, 55, was killed while assisting the fugitive squad during an attempted traffic stop. An undercover investigator had identified 17-year-old Jonathan Bun as a passenger in a black Honda Civic who was wanted on an armed robbery charge. As Deputy Daly approached the passenger side of the vehicle in his marked patrol car, Bun emerged and fired multiple shots from a .40 caliber handgun. Daly was struck in locations not protected by his body armor and later died at a local hospital.
Bun fled into nearby woods but was captured hours later after an intensive manhunt aided by a K-9 unit. The Glock used in the shooting had been stolen from a retired Georgia Department of Corrections officer’s apartment in 2009. Bun was charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault on a peace officer, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. At trial he testified he didn’t know the person approaching was an officer, but prosecutors showed a videotaped interview in which he admitted seeing the police car’s blue lights. A jury found Bun guilty of murder on May 4, 2012, after about two hours of deliberation, and he was sentenced to life without parole on August 9, 2012.
Did anyone in the area recall seeing the black Honda Civic or activity near East Fayetteville and Walker roads on the afternoon of July 20, 2011?
