Deputy Brian Lamar Mahaffey was killed on May 8, 2010, the day after his 28th birthday while serving with the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were executing a warrant related to a rape investigation on Sand Hill Drive and were clearing a residence room by room. When Mahaffey opened the closet in the master bedroom, the homeowner and suspect, 41-year-old Terry Lewis Brown, fired from inside the confined space. Mahaffey was struck in the abdomen and arm; although wearing a bulletproof vest, one round inflicted a fatal wound.
Other deputies returned fire and killed Brown at the scene. Emergency aid was provided and Mahaffey was taken to a local hospital but did not survive. Mahaffey had been with the sheriff’s office since 2005, was a Heritage High School football standout, and is survived by his wife and two young children, a son and a daughter.
Does anyone have memories of Deputy Mahaffey or information about the execution of that warrant?
